Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation (Toronto - Session 1)

Designed for upper level players, Jon will teach a personalized and detailed course laying out a clear method for rock improvisation.
Although this workshop will offer strenuous and intense chops-building exercises, the main focus is to develop a set of tools that can be used to give you a significantly larger vocabulary when improvising.
Topics covered include fretboard geometry - a new look at pentatonics, rhythmic and thematic development, analysis of chord progressions, modal improvisation, arpeggios, alternate pentatonics, creative expression and much more.
Electric Blues You Can Use (Vancouver Session)
with Emile D’eon and special guest Robben Ford
Take a look at how blues guitar playing has influenced music from the 60’s and beyond.
This course answers the question: "How do I play blues/rock leads with the scales and licks I know?"
By studying and playing traditional styles and licks from T-Bone to B.B King and learning how modern players like Clapton, Ford, Trucks, and Mayer use those influences.
Topics include major/minor pentatonics, major and minor blues, major scale, Dorian, and Mixolydian modes, 4 part chords (from major scale), 7#9 chords, and harmonic minor scale.
Right hand techniques such as alternate picking, pick and fingers, and fingerstyle will also be covered.
Discussions will also include tunings, string gauges, amps and the use of effects.
This seminar will take an in depth look at 5 songs over 5 days (class selects from a list).
Knowledge of the fingerboard is a prerequisite for this course.
Essentials of Jazz Guitar (Toronto - Session 2)
with Rob Bulger and special guest Lorne Lofsky
Designed for the intermediate to advanced player, this course will cover all of the things you need to take your jazz playing to the next level.
Topics will include rhythmic comping, chord voicings, voice leading, and improvising.
Concepts to develop your soloing such as using motifs, creating interesting melodic contours, and using chords to solo will be discussed and demonstrated.
Major, jazz, harmonic, and melodic minor scales and respective modes will be covered along with whole tone and diminished scales.
Fingerings for all major, minor, diminished, and augmented arpeggios will also be taught.
All of this will be applied to tunes of the standard jazz repertoire.
Brave New Acoustic (Toronto - Session 1)

Intermediate to Advanced players will move beyond the basic essentials of acoustic guitar playing and into deeper layers of solo performance and vocal accompaniment.
Aside from flatpicking, fingerpicking, chord harmony, scale theory, altered tunings, ear training and general applied music theory, students will forge onward into the realm of ornamentation - left hand rolls, cuts, grace notes, right hand triplets, thumb triplets and the Appalachian banjo technique of frailing using the back of the nails and more. This course is a must for those who would like to move their acoustic guitar playing off the plateau and towards “Aerial Boundaries”.
Virtuoso Rock Guitar (Toronto - Session 2))

Intermediate to advanced players will love this course covering various rock styles as they will learn methods that will elevate their playing.
Topics will include techniques such as harp and natural harmonics, sweep and economy picking, string skipping, and odd groupings using alternate picking.
This course will include an extensive study on the use of chords and chord progressions in rock.
Intervallic soloing concepts will be taught to give your solos melodic life.
Other topics include scale/arpeggio application, modes made easy, and fretboard visualization.

Topics include hybrid rolling techniques, hammer on out of nowhere, insane tapping, rhythmic displaced arpeggios, super sweeping, blues modes and dominant pentatonics, hexatonic scales, severe hyrbrid picking techniques, non-diatonic soloing applications and more!
This course will also include discussions on achieving the killer tone!
Lots of in class jamming and performing is required.
